The elementary school closest to the university I attended in Ohio was named after Mary Bethune. Because it was part of the Cleveland Public School system, it was underfunded. So some classmates founded the Mary Bethune Service Organization and, as part of MBSO, I worked to raise money for the school to buy equipment and supplies for the classrooms. It’s nice to finally know who the school was named after.
